Classroom acoustics

In our education system, the transfer of (new) information mainly occurs through oral communication. Three partners must function optimally for a successful transfer: the speaker (teacher), the receiver (the student) and the classroom acoustics. The M-decree (2015) states that children with special needs should also be included in the regular education system. This special group of children often needs optimal functioning classroom acoustics even more than their typically developing peers. This research project aims to (1) investigate if schools in Antwerp meet the requirements of the new norm NBN S 01-400-2 ‘Acoustic criteria for school buildings’ for new and renovated buildings, (2) establish the impact of a class with good and poor acoustics on the voice of the teacher, and (3) establish the impact of a class with good and poor acoustics on the responses of the student. This project investigates buildings in primary and secondary schools and its impact on teachers and students.
